Black Mountain – Rancho San Antonio

We set out to do the hike we hadn’t done since training for Half Dome last year — Black Mountain. The nice thing about this hike is that while it’s in Rancho San Antonio Park, it’s much less crowded. Also, for those who dislike complex trail routing, this is the hike for you, as there’s really just 1 turn :).

Starting from the small parking lot on Rhus Ridge Road (off I-280’s El Monte exit), where we luckily snagged a spot, we proceeded to the Duveneck Windmill trailhead and began the very upwards trek up Rhus Ridge trail. Next we took a right on the Black Mountain trail and took that all the way up the rest of the 4.42 miles to the top. There is one section we call the “false ending” where you think you’re at the top, but there is yet another large hill to be climbed, so don’t be fooled :). The top, marked with a sign, is a great place to enjoy a lunch or snack before heading back down.

The total hike distance is 9.4 miles with an elevation gain of 2400 feet. Given that the hike is 90% exposed to the sun, it’s a good idea to not attempt this hike on very hot days (speaking from experience). It’s a bit of a climb but totally worth it, though, as there are great views of Los Altos/Mountain View from the top, along with a great sense of accomplishment. For more on this hike, see bahiker.
