Jennie Lake – Sierra Nevada

We decided to venture into the world of backpacking and start with something scenic and not too strenuous. We went with Jennie Lake, located in Sequoia National Forest, just outside of Sequoia National Park. Permits were not required, so this is a good option for last-minute trips as well :).

Note that the last few miles towards the most convenient trailhead, Fox Meadow, is quite a rough, rocky dirt road and, although it’s passable by regular cars, it’s definitely better suited to 4-wheel drive vehicles with high clearance. A better option for us would have been Big Meadows trailhead, which adds about 1.5 miles to the hike but is reachable via paved roads.

With our ~20lb packs ready to go, we began the trek from the Fox Meadow trailhead. Soon there was a slight ascent towards Shell Mountain — nothing too difficult. At the junction of Jennie Lake and Weaver Lakes, we continued towards Jennie Lake. After that, the next landmark was Poop Out Pass. The pass provided some great views of the Sierra Nevadas and was quite easy. Before we knew it, the 5.5 miles were behind us and we reached Jennie Lakes.

Given our late start, a lot of the more desirable camping spots at the lake were already occupied, but we were able to find a spot that was satisfactory. There was enough space between spots that it never felt overcrowded or noisy, which was nice. To have a chance at getting a camping spot right along the lake, aim to arrive in the early to mid afternoon.

After a leisurely breakfast the next morning, we headed back taking the same route. Poop Out Pass was a bit more sweat-inducing as it was uphill in the return direction.

Note that bear canisters are recommended for this trip since this is bear country :). Fires were officially not allowed but we did see several other parties with fires after dark.
