On our big roadtrip/move trip from the bay area to New Mexico, we stopped by Zion National Park for a couple days and hiked Observation Point Trail. This hike was an alternative to the more popular (and much more fear-inducing) Angel’s Landing hike. It was a bit of a climb but well worth it for the great views at the top!
We started the hike at Weeping Rock Trailhead and began the uphill climb on what was a mostly paved trail. We were very glad to have sunglasses as it was quite windy, which meant sand/dirt was frequently blown into our face.
About halfway up the ascent, there was an option to take a side trip to Hidden Canyon, but we were a bit short on time and opted not to do it. Next time!
We soon entered Echo Canyon, which reminded us a bit of Pinnacles National Monument. The narrow walls of Echo Canyon in tandem with the sun made for some interesting photos.
The last mile or so from Observation Point was mostly flat. Soon we reached Observation Point, where we stopped for lunch and many photos of the nearly 360 degree views. Angel’s Landing was also within view, out front and below us.
We returned the same way, happy to have our poles for the hike back downhill on the mostly paved trail.
