Cathedral Rock

For our 2nd hike in Sedona we chose Cathedral Rock which treats hikers to some killer views of the red rock formations just south of Sedona in the Oak Creek area. The hike was just what we looking for relatively flat for the pup and a constant stream of views of the famous red rocks of Sedona.

The hike initially follows a wash through a small gully. Be on the lookout for mountain bikers as this trail is extremely popular with the cross country crowd. We had to be careful as a few of the bikers were less than courteous about slowing down for hikers.

Although you are treated to numerous views of the rocks the hike is in very close proximity to Sedona and the further North you venture the more civilization creeps into your view. After about 3 miles you reach the aptly named Cathedral Rock. There is a trail that scrambles up to the base of the cathedral but with Max (wonder dog) in tow it wasn’t feasible to climb the trail. If you wish you can continue and make a loop around Cathedral Rock for an 8 mile loop. We instead beat a hasty retreat to rush back for our dinner reservations.

Can’t wait to go back and finish the hike proper and make it all the way around Cathedral Rock.
